Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is a microfilter?A microfilter is a small, in-line device that stops your ADSL connection being disrupted by telephones connected to the same line. If you don't filter your telephones, then your ADSL connection will be unstable. A high-quality microfilter will make sure you can have a stable broadband Internet connection with no reduction in the quality of your telephone service. Please read our tutorial for more information.
How many microfilters do I need? When you have ADSL on your telephone line, you must "filter" all your telephone-type devices. You need one filter for each telephone. You also need a filter for any fax machines connected. If your Sky Digibox is connected to the phone line, then you need a filter for that too. You also need a filter if you are using a dial-up (56k, V.90) modem. Our tutorial gives more information and explains the connection options.Where do I connect microfilters? Please have a look at our tutorial for information on how to connect your microfilters. What is SIN346 and why is it important?BT SIN346 is BT's ADSL interface specification (see www.sinet.bt.com) Many microfilters available in the UK today do not comply with SIN346 - usually because they have been modified from a design for another country, or because the design has been compromised to make the filter smaller or to save cost. This results in microfilters that sort of work for most people most of the time, but that cause problems in certain situations or don't work with some telephones. If you get noise on your phone line when you have ADSL, or if your ADSL connection drops when you pick up the phone - then the chances are this is down to badly designed microfilters. It's also true that some microfilters prevent CLI (Caller display) devices working. For the best chance of avoiding these kinds of problems, use microfilters that have been designed to meet BT SIN346 - and preferably ones that have actually been tested by BT to confirm compliance.
